how to start multiple X sessions at startup ?

When has finished booting, I'd like to have a few X login screens waiting, so that I don't need to drop to a command line to log in without login my wife out.

I've checked the X start-up scripts but I've not found any clean way of doing that. Any idea ?

You don't have to log your wife out to start a second X session for yourself. Have your wife login first and start her X session. Then do Ctrl-Alt-F1 which will bring you to a virtual terminal with a command line login. Login for your self and run:

$ startx : -- :1

That will start a second X session for you. To get back to your wife's X session do Alt-F7; to go back to yours from hers do Alt-F8.

In case you don't want to run to a console every time you boot in order to start a second X session, you can try adding your options in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers

for example:

:0 local /bin/nice -n -10 /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt07 -deferglyphs 16 -depth 24
:1 local /bin/nice -n -10 /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 vt08 -deferglyphs all -depth 32
:2 local /bin/nice -n -10 /usr/X11R6/bin/X :2 vt09 -deferglyphs 16 -depth 16
etc, etc...

After that you might want to edit xdm-config and copy the variables you have for your first X session to match your second, third, etc X session and, in that case, make renamed copies of the files mentioned in xdm-config to fit your other X sessions.
