how to modify the boot sequence?

hi, running mdk 9.0, kde 3,
using dsl pppoe dail up.

here's the deals: on boot, if i bring up eth0 first before pppoe, eth0 interface will sit there waiting for IP response and then fail.
(of course its fail, because it needs to dail up first)

now, i disable eth0 at boot time, and put pppoe start on boot. still no internet, because i need to:
1) su
2) adsl-stop (because it started!)
3) ifconfig eth0 up
4) adsl-start

in order to get internet.
that script is a bit annoying, this is what i really want to do, not sure what's proper steps to follow:

1) bring up eth0, without having eth0 seeking for ips
2) bring up ppoe, follow dailing process
3) i can get on the internet

thanks

I know nothing about dsl but I came across this link that might interest you
http://www.lvwnet.com/vince/linux/adsl.html
take a look at his pppoe.conf file and maybe that is your answer?

hum... that page is a good page for someone who needs to get their linux box talk to the router, the pppoe he was talking about was came with mandrake and redhat

as for the boot sequence, i think it has to do with some boot script, anybody? :P

sirpelidor,

I'm still a noob and I don't know about Mandrake but maybe you can change the order by the number in the names of the symlinks in your rcX.d directory (X being your runlevel).

You might want to read up on the scripts. Maybe someone else has a better link.

I think the easiest is to disable eth0 from starting at boot and then add the lines you have above to
/etc/rc.d/rc.local. rc.local is the script that is run after everything is run at boot time. The lines are

adsl-stop (because it started!)
ifconfig eth0 up
adsl-start

No need for su in this script.

i found a way to fixed that problem, i bring up eth0, but i made eth0 "not" to sniff for ip address,
i disable adsl at boot time, so once system is up, i can choose if i wanna get on the net or not.

thank you for all your help guys, case close

Hmm, coulda swore the webpage I linked you to was basically talking about doing something very simular, making eth0 wait indefinatlly untill you actually made a connection.
