How to Manage Laptop Performance in Mandrake 10.1 ?

Hi Friends,

Very recently I have switched to Linux from Windows-98. My machine has become slow ever since linux was loaded. Are there some tools or options or commands to manage the machine performance ?

Please help

Thanks

Edit /etc/sysconfig/harddisk

and uncomment the lines which are indicated.

Also add the word

COMPACT

on a line by itself toward the beginning of /etc/lilo.conf and then run LILO while logged in as root.

Then reboot.

You should see a marked change.

It will be quite apparent.

Re: Lilo

Then type

the performance is getting bad again. Is there a way I can terminate the not required sessions.

Go into the MCC and turn off non-required services.

Check the info tabs to see if you need something or not.

Set Mandrake/KDE to always start with an EMPTY session.

Restart the DM then open a console and then SU to root and

kill -s 9 PID

where PID is the process ID of any "session" or task running in memory.

To find out the PID run

ps -aux

KDE loves to leave ancient konqueror sessions around, which it tries to restart upon the next login.

It's supposed to kill these off over time, but often it seems to fail to do so.
