How to make external hdd load fast?

Hey

I have a MyBook which use minutes to load, at least when I browse it in GUI mode.
In windows, it only take a few seconds till I'm able to browse fast on MyBook. Also on Sabayon Linux, it only took few seconds.
But with mandriva, it takes minutes.

It's no problem to mount it, it just takes long time before I can browse in the media stored on the MyBook.
Is it possible to make it load as fast as in windows and Sabayon in Mandriva?

What program are you using to browse with? Dolphin? Try installing Xfe and browse the device. I find it much faster than Dolphin. It is also easier moving files around with it. I'm a long time Mandy user, I know of no reason why it should be slow.

I have a D-link NAS that connects via ethernet, and Xfe works well enough.

I also saw this on network speed for a MyBook:

Quote:
Network speed

Although MyBook Ethernet-capable disks come with a Gigabit Ethernet interface, the network speed is significantly slower, especially in older models, where it varies between 3–6 MByte/s, with an average of 4.5 MByte/s because of the limited 200 MHz clock frequency speed of the ARM processor within. The CPU capacity to handle data is low, as WD Support seems to have answered a customer.[5]. The Newer models, WDH1NC and WDH2NC, compare to USB drive speed at about 10MB/s Write and 25MB/s read.[6].

Yes, It goes faster when browsing with Xfe. But it is still slow.
It takes a long time to load the MyBook.

When I browse in the media on MyBook, I expect it to open folders and files just as fast as the folders stored on the hdd.
With Xfe, it still takes like 5-10 seconds to open different folders.

In windows and Sabayon, it takes 5-10 seconds to load the hole MyBook. And after that, I can browse it just as fast as folders stored on the hdd.

Have you got the remote disk mounted in fstab? Are you using cifs?

Not sure, but I don't think so. Here is my fstab output:

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>

#Entry for /dev/sda5 :
UUID=3d7500c4-9291-4d8d-9869-78820b27e188	/	ext4	noatime	1	1
#Entry for /dev/sda7 :
UUID=7bf1f468-4d5c-4c8f-8447-87970973c1a4	/home	ext4	noatime	1	2
#Entry for /dev/sda1 :
UUID=2420F50920F4E32A	/windows/sys/win_c	ntfs-3g	defaults,umask=000	0	0
#Entry for /dev/sda2 :
UUID=D8841C1A841BFA28	/windows/c/win_d	ntfs-3g	defaults,umask=000	0	0
/dev/cdrom	/media/cdrom	auto	umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec	0	0
none	/proc	proc	defaults	0	0
#Entry for /dev/sda6 :
UUID=af6fd841-a7f9-4910-87eb-18a0b74812cb	swap	swap	defaults	0	0
/dev/sda3 /windows/d ntfs rw,nls=utf8,umask=000 0 0
Well, I haven't heard of CIFS before, so I dont use it consciously at least.

It doesn't appear you have an entry to mount the remote drive to your file system. Here is the entry I have for mine.

Quote:
//dlink/Cliff /mnt/Cliff cifs user,credentials=/etc/samba/auth.dlink.cliff 0 0
I'm running Mandriva as well, I don't have any long delays using Xfe. I used MCC to create the entry in fstab, and to mount it the first time. Now if my server is on, and I boot Mandriva, it mounts the remote share.

Could you have made a guide on how to do this?

I remember on Sabayon, I could do some changes on how removeable media should behave. There I choose to run autorun programs which was on the media. And MyBook has a autorun program, so I think this might have been the reason why it worked so smooth in Sabayon. (I did this changes through a graphical program.)
Could there be something similar I could do on Mandriva you think?

I have never seen anything like you describe.
