I downloaded AMSN and everytime im ging to use it i have to go to the directory amsn is in and then type 'wis amsn'. is there a way to resume all of this in one icon on the desktop?

Not sure what windowmanager your using (most likely kde or gnome) but you can just right click on the desktop and select "Create New" and "Link to Application", fill in the name of the application and select an icon on the first tab and then select the "execute" tab and type in "wis amsn" on the command line, hit "OK" and you're done.
In KDE, if you want to make this a menu option, you can also right-click on the KDE icon, choose "Menu Editor," browse to the location you want the application icon, click "Add Application," and fill in the details.
