How to install Java for mandrake 9,2

Does anyone know how to get java installed on madrake for mozilla and konquer? it seems like it installs but it never works with the browsers :( any help would be great

Depending on which java packages you have installed, I could only share the steps on what I had installed (j2re1.4.2_02) to my 9.2.

Since you had said you installed java, presuming it's the afore-mentioned package, all you need to do is make a symbolic link to your mozilla and konqueror browsers.

For mozilla:

$ cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
$su
enter root password
# ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
(you can replace the path corresponding to where your libjavaplugin_oji.so is located)
Go into mozilla's preferences and make sure you have java enabled.

For konqueror:

Start > Configuration > KDE > WebBrowsing > Java & Java Script
Under the "Java" tab, where "Path to Java executable, or 'java'" is, simply type in the path to where your java executable is. Mine is /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/bin/java. And enable java globally.

Have fun!

Did that really work for Konqueror? Java works fine in Mozilla 1.4. I am using 1.4.2_02.
However, it does not work in Konqueror. I don't think Konqueror will work with 1.4.2_02.

Hmmm...I dunno why it doesn't work for you, but like I had posted, it works like a charm. Did you set the path to java executable right? Anyone else using j2re1.4.2_02 and have java working with konqueror?

edit: I guess there might be those in doubt that don't believe that j2re1.4.2_02 will work in konqueror in 9.2, since no one has bothered to reply. So just to erase all doubt, you can see a screenshot of my 9.2 will j2re1.4.2_02 in action here (just right click a view image).

Pretty sure I did. As I said, works fine with Mozilla 1.4 and Galeon 1.3.8, though a little slow to load in either. But Konqueror just sits there and says 'no executable found'

Well, I don't know what to tell you, but as you can see from the link in my previous post , I do have java working perfectly with konqueror. Maybe you can double check your path to java executable again...I've seen where some people install java as user and the executable ends up in /usr/local/java/j2re1.4.2.02/...

Also, sorry for the stupid questions, but, did you scan for new plugins in kde ' plugin control module and enabled java? You might want to set a path to your java executable directory to scan.

Other than that, I see that 9.2 as still buggy/quirky...in mozilla 1.4/firebird 0.7, my flash won't render one day, then work fine another...go figure:rolleyes:

Hello,
I downloaded J2re the same one than your and then installed it...

But I search my entire website for the file libjavaplugin_oji.so, I cannot find it...
And if I try to reinstall the package it says that it is correctly installed...

Any idea how to try to remove it, and then reinstall it?

I hope one day, I will manage to have java working

Cheers,
Ludo

??? I don't understand why you are searching "my entire website"...

Did you make a symlink to libjavaplugin_oji.so?

If your open up a file browser, such as konqueror, and browse in your /usr directory, libjavaplugin_oji.so should be in there, e.g., /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_02/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so or /usr/local/j2re1.4.2_02/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so...depending on how you installed it.

Or you can go to KDE kicker -> Applications -> File tools -> Find files and enter libjavaplugin_oji.so and make sure you select "File:/" in the pull-down menu for "Look in:". That should tell you where it is.

Did you set your path to java executable in konqueror and enabled java? How about for mozilla/firebird/etc.? Read my previous post and if you still can't find it, then post back and I'll try to help further.

I have java working, kind of, in Mozilla, Galeon, and Firebird. Loads on-line Java games very slowly and performance is very sluggish. Won't work in Konq at all.

I guess what works for some won't work for others...

When you state "Won't work in Konq at all.", This leads me to believe that you STILL doubt that java works in konqueror, otherwise you wouldn't have posted your negative disbelief in such the manner you did. Well, proof is in the pudding and I believe I have proved it otherwise.

As I have asked you before, and I'll ask you again, where is you path to java executable in konqueror?

It just seems a bit odd that I got java working perfectly, with hardly no lag what-so-ever in konqueror/mozilla 1.4/firebird 0.7 and yet, your problems with java leaves me to believe that you have something not set right. Believe me, I had my share of problems with java, but it's such a simple "learn from your/others' errors/mistakes". How about posting exactly which j2re package you have installed and list all the symlinks/paths you have set.
