If the kernel detected the 1394 interface you should be able to go into the KDE control center and find the camera under the 1394 applet when it is connected.

Dunno.
Most cameras are found as USB devices.
Video cameras are another beast altogether and require rather high bandwidths for the xfers.
There are a slew of applications in Mandrake (see my sig) which support 1394 but I'm not sure about USB.
Give it a try.

AS far as i know, you will almost certainly have to go for firewire (1394)
It is the better option anyway for video transfer
I'm fairly sure that it won't be supported with usb under linux, but have a look anyway. I think you will end up having to go with the firewire though.
Cheers

Yeah, the only exception might be the camcorders which keep the videos on memory sticks, etc.
These, (though lower quality) are nothing but files which can be transferred via USB. The transfers are also not dependant upon a sustained data rate.
Digital Video is normally streamed via 1394 syncronously to the recipient computer, on all other devices, especially from tape based units.
While USB 2.0 is actually slightly faster than 1394, the preponderance of 1394 support for video has set it up as the de-facto standard for video xfers.

True but generally only to transfer pictures. Most video cameras have both tape and memory stick. My sisters panasonic has a memory stick but the camera only uses the stick for still photos and the tape for video which needs the 1394.
On the face of it usb is faster, but not continuously. That's why 1394 is used for video xfer , because it can give a guaranteed continuous xfer speed.
