how to get internet working in mandriva
 

just loaded mandriva 2009 today and the internet won't work even though it says network is up on interface eth0 then gives the ip address and gateway address. Any ideas please? :scratch:

What do you mean by 'not working'? If you have an IP address on eth0, then the interface is up. Where is the gateway pointed? Do you have a router? What type of inter connection do you have?

Open a command prompt, try pinging any well know system. ie 'ping www.yahoo.com' . If that fails, try
'ping 69.147.76.15' If that works, then you have a DNS issue. If both fail, talk to your ISP, get some help there. All commands above are entered without the quotes.

command prompt wouldnt run them.It just faded away and didn't come back.Tried to connect with konquerer and recieved the following:-The server www.KDE.org refused to allow this computer to make a connection.The server while currently connected to the Internet may not be configured to allow requests.

You never answered the question about the router. You may want to log in and make sure everything is working. Also, try to restart your rc.inet1, it should show your ip and mac addresses. Try and see if you can ping a site after that.

Post the results of the pinging. Some versions of Mandriva have a firewall enabled. Have a look in MCC to see if there is a firewall running. That will block a lot of things.

In order to help more, you need to answer the questions.

sorry to seem to be ignorant but am new to this.I made an adjustment in the internet part and now I can get Linux home,Jamendo and some others that pop down as suggestions but they seem to load slowly.Maybe it is the firewall thing you spoke about.Found MCC but what part do I look in please.(is shorewall the one?):confused:

I have a D-Link DSL-502T ADSL Router running to a D-Link DI-524 wireless router.I know they work because I have run Linux Mint and Zenwalk on the computer with no Internet troubles.

I think that Mandriva 2009 suffers from the same slow internet as Mandriva 2008.0 and 2008.1. It is to do with Ipv6 superseding Ipv4. There is a fix for the bug.

I am using Mandriva Linux 2009.0 (final) here and I see no speed issues at all, in fact this release provides far better performance than I had with Mandriva Linux 2008.1 (Spring), so if anything, based on my personal experience the ipv6 issue has been fixed in 2009.0.

I connect through a Cable Internet connection (broadband up to 10Mbps). I also recently upgraded my system with a new Biostar TF570 SLI mainboard, an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 5200+, with 1 GB 800Mhz RAM, and a nVidia GeForce 7300 GT video card with 256MB video RAM onboard.

After completing this upgrade, I ran Mandriva Linux 2008.1 for a short time until 2009.0 was released. It is possible that the updated equipment may play a (possibly significant) role in my improved experience, although as I recall I was happily impressed with how much faster 2009.0 loaded at boot time and also with how much faster WEB pages seemed to render in Firefox. From where I stand, the current Mandriva release (2009.0) is the best to date.

Going back to the beginning, your ping results appear to be slow at 241ms. When I ping yahoo.com here I get return times averaging about 90ms.

Did you use the Mandriva Control Center to set up your Internet connection? If you did not, you may get better results (reduces the possibility of any missed or incorrect setting).

Open MCC (Tools > System Tools > Configure your computer in the menu system).

Select Network & Internet in the category liat (left).

Open the Set up a new network interface (LAN, ISDN, ADSL, ...) icon under Manage your network devices (top-right).

Follow the prompts and see how you go
