have you tried it using Webmin (it's quite straightforward then).
Before I can help you, please tell us which purpose the database server is for.....

What is the exact command your using to start mysql? Do you have either or both /var/lib/mysql and /var/run/mysql directories?
More details get better answers.

I have installed proftpd on mandrake and it has to be a FTP-server.
But now everyone can connect to the FTP and I want to make a mySQL database where all the users are in stored who can connect to the FTP!
The both directories:
/var/lib/mysql and /var/run/mysql
I don't have :S
I quess mysql is not installed? But I choose while installing mandrake to install mysql. Why didn't he installed it? Or what am I doing wrong?
