how to configure Japanese input inder MDK 101. Community?

I have installed japanese font support and japanese keyboard. When I switch to japanese keyboard and select a particular input method I should be able to type japanese characters. But it does not work (even though I have also istalled russian keyboard, and it works just fine). Is anyone using Japanese input under Mandrake 10.1 community and does it work? Thanks
