How do I shift my screen over?
 

I just installed Mandrake 10.0 and the screen is skewed to the right. Vertical positioning is just fine, but I need to slide the picture over to the left. I don't want to play with the monitor buttons because it's a dual-boot system and the screen's fine in the other OS.

...any takers?

I have never come across any software tools within windows or Linux that can manipulate the placement of the gui on monitor screen. As far as I know the only way to move is with controls on the monitor.

I don't have windows on my machine so I cannot move my screen in Linux to see if it would be moved in windows, which seems to be your worry.

If I'm not mistaken, screen positioning is remembered for each resolution independantly. Therefore if you had windows set to a resolution of 800x600 and Linux set at 1080x768 say, then you should be able to move and center your screen on both operating systems without it affecting the other. Simply use different screen resolutions on both operating systems.

you want xvidtune. it's not that easy to handle, but basically you can use that to shift the screen around within limits and then request a modeline entry from it. you then need to take that final modeline (dumped to your terminal window) and paste it into your /etc/X11/XF86Config (or xorg.conf) and restart.

Also you can run XFDrake and try different monitors and target resolutions.

This adjusts the display timings.

In the end, I installed a recent NVIDIA driver (the latest driver wouldn't install for me), and I'm good-to-go. The screen has corrected itself :-)
