how do i configure my network printer in mandriva 10.2?

my computer is running dual operating systems. Windows XP and Mandriva 10.2
i need to figure out how to install my printer on Mandriva. the printer is in my home network with another windows machine. Mandriva started using the internet (through the network) without me doing anything the printer is an HP photosmart 7150

thanks for your help in advance!

I think you might want to look at CUPS and if the printer is attached to a Windoze box, you might also need Samba.
HP might have a linux driver, you might also want to Google for it or check out Linuxprinting.org

Sooo .....
we can assume that on your network all the other windows computers can use the printer OK and that you just need to configure Mandriva, Right ?

How many computers are on the network, can your computer running windows use the printer ?

If its just a Mandriva issue, as has been said you need to configure Samba and Add a Printer. If your Windows also can't use the printer then there are a few other things to do as well.

you need to give us a little more info so that we can help

two computers on the network - it's just at my house.
the windows machine can use the printer, but mandriva can't.
what is/how do i configure samba?

oh yea - HP and linuxprinting.org neither had a driver for my specific printer

floppywhopper 06-07-2005 07:06 AM

OK we've established that the computer connected to the printer can use the printer, But .....
can the other computer which you are dual booting, can the windows on that computer see the other computer with the printer and print.

In other words have you set up your printer to be able to be shared on your network.

The other question is, does mandrake support the printer that you are using.

the windows partition on the mandriva machine can detect the network and print to the printer. how would i find out if mandriva supports the printer i'm using?

floppywhopper 06-07-2005 06:34 PM

Normally The easiest way to find out is to go here

http://www1.mandrivalinux.com/en/hardware.php3

however I checked and found no entries for HP

So
These directions work for 10.1 so should not be too different
Go to the Mandriva Control Centre
go Main menu
go system
go configuration
go configure your computer
enter the Root password
click on Hardware
click on Printers
The Printer Management Tool should come up
click on Add a new Printer
keep going Next
until you come to a screen with a list of Printer Brands
click on HP and find the Model you have
( I found HP Photosmart 7150 in Mandrake 10.0 )
so you should too
just follow all the prompts
and you should have it working
As long as Mandriva has the network configured correctly

hope this helps

that doesn't seem to be working

would it make a difference if the printer was hooked directly to the other computer on my network?

floppywhopper 06-08-2005 05:49 PM

We seem to be going around in circles here .....

you have two computers on a home network right ?
do they go through a hub, or crossover cable, wireless or what
to form the network

If computer 1 has the printer
does it have Windows and Mandrake or just windows
how is the computer connected to the printer
parallel port, USB or what

It is computer 2 that has Windows and Mandrake right ?

For Mandrake to be able to talk to another compter running windows
we need to configure Samba
have you configured samba ?
Have you assigned static IP addresses to each computer

to check if you have configured Samba correctly
go into a web browser in Mandrake and type
smb://name-of-other-computer
or
smb://IP-address-of-other-computer

sorry about the whole going around in circles thing

.two computers on a home network
.go through a linksys broadband router
.computer 1 has the printer
-it only has windows, connects to the printer through USB
.computer 2 has mandrake and windows
.I don't know how to configure samba and i'm not sure if it has a static IP addres - how would i figure out if it does/what it is?

thanks for your patience

floppywhopper 06-08-2005 11:07 PM

ok
now we are getting somewhere
so I suggest that you make compter 1
have a static IP address
for eg 192.168.0.101 / 255.255.255.0
and if you havent you will need a name for the workgroup
eg garryozzynet

for computer 2
for both the windows and mandrake installs
give it a static IP of 192.168.0.102 / 255.255.255.0

to do this in windows
you need to go into"my computer" > control panel > network

to do this in Mandrake
go into the Mandrake Control Centre
and change it there

let us know how you get on

I would also suggest you have a read of these online books

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linag2/book/index.html

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba2/book/toc.html

There are other related how-to's at these sites

http://www.tldp.org/

http://www.faqs.org/docs/

http://www.linuxdoc.com/

http://www.linuxdocs.org/

Many of the how-to's will be doubled up across the sites
you will need to have a basic understanding of Networks
IP addresses, Samba etc

i found the static IP addresses but still can't figure out how to make hte printer work

i'll check out those websites when i get home from school

thanks for your help!

garyozzy 06-12-2005 06:29 AM
