How Do I configure a serial port printer?

I'm using mandrake 9.2 and am having a heck of a time configuring a serial printer. Not a USB printer just a plain old Okidata line printer to hook to the serial port at /dev/ttyS0. This was a snap under older versions of linux but seems to have become something of a chore under 9.2 because of something called CUPS. I need some advice and quickly as this project is about to go south all because of this stupid printer.

I can't help you much (as the exact problem is not clear), but aren't you suppose to use /dev/lp0 for the printer? Maybe I don't understand. Sorry.

Hi,

I have wrestled with CUPS myself, and my first advice is to always use the web interface - make sure CUPSD is running and point a browser at http://localhost:631.

It should be pretty obvious what to do - set up a local printer and if it still fails to print a test page please supply more detals, and any error messages you get.

Hmmm, how do I explain this using the graphical CUPS interface there isn't an option to have a printer be a serial port printer. So I'm trying to figure out how to create a printer/port definition that allows me to use a serial port typically described by ttyS1 or ttyS0. It used to be you'd define the printer in the printcap with a filter and pretty much do an lp -d to the printer name you gave it in printcap so you were good. But CUPS doesn't let you do that anymore. (yes the systems we're replacing are over 5 years old RH 6.9 which is old linux). I've gotten the printers to work through the parallel and through the USB ports so I know printing works and I have CUPS configured. Now I just need to find out how to configure CUPS to recognise legacy devices like serial port printers.
