How can I speed up the boot process on 2005 LE?

Mandriva 2005 LE is the best Linux distro I've ever run and I've finally gotten away from needing a dual boot system with XP. But...I've seen some talk about speeding up the boot process by running some of the set up processes in parallel. I assume these are the processes that block on hardware calls. Does anyone know what tasks can be parallelized or have some type of quick fix for speeding up the boot process?

Thanks in advance!

Are you talking about this?

Yes. That is the page I was referring to. I was just curious to find out if someone had tried it. I don't want to spend hours hosing up my system if someone else already did the work.

I am not one to discourage tinkering and experimentation, however, if you have "Finally" gotten Linux running as you want... Playing around with the boot process (ie: fixing something that's not broke) to save a minute or two seems like a waste of time. But I have to say that I have done worse things...

I will heed your advice. I'm sure Mandriva spends many hours decreasing the boot time on each new release.

But I'm sure you *always* have backups first

I have the same problem.

For me it takes between 4 and 5 minutes to boot through to the desktop!
Admittedly my machine is only a 350MHz Pentium II but none of the earlier
versions of Mandrake I had took anywhere this long.
The previous one I had took less than two minutes to boot up.
Other than that its speed is ok.

I have watched the boot-up messages to see if there was anything
that took up a lot of time but when I disabled the slowest service
my usb flash drive would not work.

The answer I'm looking for is: Is this kind of boot up time typical under
Mandriva 2005 LE on similar hardware? If not, how long does it take for
others?

Well, I try too but realistically I do it every couple weeks... if my system crashed now I would be in trouble... That reminds me.. gotta go...
