how can I check a dns entry?

I have asked for my domain name to be hosted on a dns server.

Is there a terminal command to query a dns server has a listing.

Whois list the servers for the domain name but the dns doesn't work on ping or browser, on different machines and after 48hours waiting.

Thanks

Try dig. Make sure the client you are on has the dns server in its resolv.conf (restar network if you change this) and then:

dig computer.at.your.domain

... and it shoud tell you the info you want.

Not sure this is what I want. I want to check on someone elses name server that an entry is made for
the domain name and what it resolves to.

the sort of command is like this;

pingthedomain ns1.freedomainserver.net registereddomainname.com

answer: registerdomainname.com 92.4.98.221

I feel sure such a command may exist from a terminal window.

You can do a simple DNS lookup. Tye 'dns lookup' in google, and use any of the sites listed to run a query. name-to-ip, or ip-to-name, or MX records for mail servers, etc.

Hope this helps !!
