Unhappy Help with my nvidia card

hey,

I've installed the driver like otis said in another post. Now here my problem, after the installation I typed startx and I saw the nvidia splash screen. I was happy until it came back in failsafe mode and I got an error saying this :

Code:
XI0 Fatal I0 error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 request (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining
after reading this message I typed startx again and I got the same error a second time

and if I select linux in lilo I got to nvidia splash screen and it turn black and then go back to the nvidia splash screen.... so I can't load KDE because of that and now I'm in windows.... I got linux like 3 days ago so I'm still a

now I'll go and check if I have the good version for my kernel-source and I come back with the result.
any help would be very appreciated

this isn't actually an error, just the X server basically saying it has nothign left to do, and doesn't believe it ever did do anything. this would imply that in your case the nvidia driver couldn't load, but this error would be listed higher up in the X console output.

ok I finally got it working lol. I re installed mdk 10 and I downloaded the lastest nvidia driver and instaled it asap... first I got a superb error saying
Code:
(EE)NVIDIA (0):failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA (0): ***Aborting***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have usable configuration
so I looked in my XF86Config-4 file and everything looked fine... so I remembred to add "nvidia" in modprobe.preload and I typed startx and everything worked well now lol I'm proud (did it by myself)

Many many thanks to all the people who are giving their time to help other people that begin with linux.
And thanks to otis for his great HOW-TO

***EDIT***
I've perform a glxgears and here's the results
Code:
22394 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4478.800 FPS
43321 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8664.200 FPS
42646 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8529.200 FPS
31956 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6391.200 FPS
43817 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8763.400 FPS
43944 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8788.800 FPS
43428 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8685.600 FPS
34805 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6961.000 FPS
43313 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8662.600 FPS
is these results are good for a Gforce 4 mx 440 ?

I'm no expert, but try the NvAGP options 1, 2, & 3. These might give you a more consistent frame rate.

That's in XF86Config-4 file under Device. Add it as the last line like this:
Code:
Option "NvAGP" "3"
Try out the different options until you find one that suits. 3 worked for me.

EDIT Glad you sorted it out.
