Question Help needed on installing win32-codecs

I am trying to get .wmv files to play in MPlayer/KMPlayer. I read that I needed win32-codecs. This is what I've done so far:

I downloaded win32-codecs-1.8-1plf2007.0.i586.rpm
with the software installer, i.e. clicked on the link in Firefox and chose "software installer." It installed fine. But, my .wmv file still won't play. I looked at the download page again and saw:
Quote:
Requires :
libm.so.6(GLIBC_2.1)
rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1
rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0)
libc.so.6
libm.so.6
I assume I need to download these next. Correct? I notice that glibc 2.4.7 is already installed on my computer. So then, do I skip the glibc files?

I'm new to Linux, so I appreciate any hand-holding you can give me. Also, since I have very little knowlege of the command line, can you help me via GUI? (Sorry, I know this bugs some of you.)

Thank you.

Have you tried to type in "urpmi win32-codecs" in console as root?

[edit]This is pretty stragiht forward, it should also take care of dependencies. startmenu --> system --> terminals --> konsole. Type in "su" and then type your root password and press enter. Copy the command from above and press Shift + insert to paste it in the konsole.[/edit]

To install the win32 codecs using urpmi, you first need to setup the PLF repos using easyurpmi.

I got this:
Quote:
bash: urpmi: command not found
I got a similar message for trying to set up the PLF repos.

This is the text from easyurpmi:
Quote:

You need to switch to root using "su -" in order to access the urpmi command.

PCLinuxOS is almost the same as Mandriva 2007 in numerous ways but it is so much easier for non-techies to use. With PCLinuxOS the Win32-codecs can be installed so much more easily. By comparison, the urpmi system on Mandriva 2007 is clumsy to set up - and a very slow process to get going for dial up users. I'd recommend you "upgrade" to PCLinuxOS. There are lots of better features and you will not need to learn much that is new as an administrator because PCLinuxOS is more or less built on Mandriva 2007.

Phidor.

Smile Making progress...figured out how to update the mirrors.

I found part of the problem:

I was entering su [password]. I didn't know that I had to hit [enter] after typing in "su":
Quote:
[type in "su"][enter]
password[type in password][enter]
Once I entered the password, I cut & pasted the code from easyurpmi . These are the results:
Quote:

I see that it says:
Quote:
unable to access hdlist file of "plf_free", medium ignored
I will try another mirror to see if anything changes.

[Edit] Yes, either retry the mirror or try a new mirror. It works. [/Edit]

Thumbs up Missing dependencies installed for win32-codecs

After my last post, I went back to the Control Center. I got this message:
Quote:
To satisfy dependencies, the following package(s) also need
to be installed:
with a list of packages.

So, it looks like we're making even more progress.

Thanks again for your help! Much appreciated.

[Edit] Sound & Video are now working! [/Edit]
