Help! Missing commands in Mandriva Linux 2007!!!

Uh hello, i'm a begginer in Linux but i've learnt a few things so I colud handle out by myself IF I had some commands on my distro!

For example, make command is missing, also ifconfig alsaconfig and a lot more that i haven't tested but are surely missing. All those commands worked on SLAX so i don't get it

I've read that apt-get can help me with the make command (which is the most important for me to get) but i can't install that thing (no idea how).

Any software packages seem to be unabled or missing and the system is up to date.

Also i've seen that if i poweroff with console mode, when I restart and I put Startx it doesn't load my NVIDIA Geforce 7300 SE drivers properly, so I thought that it might be solved installing the new ones but I do need make command so I need help plz!!!

if it is not possible to post or the answr is too complex mail me at tidus199193@yahoo.es

Mandriva includes a software package manager (System > Configuration > Packaging > Install, remove and update software in the menu system) for the GUI and urpmi for the command prompt. The GUI package manager has a search function near the top of the window with the choice of package name, description, or file name as search criteria to help you find the package you want (e.g.: you can enter make in the search box and choose file names as the criteria).

If the package containing make is not found, you should configure a set of Internet software media sources for the Mandriva package management system. There is far too much software packaged for use with Mandriva Linux to make for a practical installer download so Mandriva has set up ftp mirrors across the WEB which contain the software repositories. I have written an article on my blog to help users new to Mandriva Linux get these media sources set up on their computers.

HTH,
