help: Mandrake login screen doesn't appear

hi,

my mandrake 10.0 suddenly lost its graphical login screen. after the lilo boot loader started, system falls back to shell login, then i typed in user/password, and i also have to type 'startx' to get into x windows. previously, i login from graphical login screen, and afterwards x windows starts automatically.

what's wrong?

As root

chkconfig --add dm

Then restart your machine.

This response will not be very good as I do not have my machine in front of me at the moment...

But because you can launch into xwindows there is a configuration you can setup within mandrake for booting to the graphical login or the terminal.

So I suggest playing around with the makndrake configuration and insure it says to boot to the GUI.

Check and see what your default run level is set at.

Code:
# vi /etc/inittab
For a graphical login, it should be set at 5, e.g. id:5:initdefault:

okey dokey

mine was set at id:3:initdefault: i changed to 5 and woola, have my graphical login screen back

this is interesting since i didn't remember changing that file, could it be some of the softwares i installed change the default runlevel?

but at least now i know how to login as root, ever since i created a user on my box, i lost root login option at login screen

There has probably neen an update for the initscripts package, the inittab file comes as part of it. For some reason mandrake have set the default runlevel to 3, which is full multiuser & Network with no GUI, which simply doesn't start the Display manager service.

Setting the initdefault to 5 runs all the same services as runlevel 3, but also start the 'dm' service, so you get a nice graphical login screen Can't for the life of me figure out why they don't have it set to runlevel 5 by default though....
