help

i have just installed mandrake 9.1 and the installation seemed to go well and once it had finished it rebooted. Instead of getting some kind of graphical log on screen all i got was a black screen asking me to logon and them for my password.
Is there a way of getting the graphical screen to operate ? to make it easier for me to configure everything.
Is there a problem with the video driver ? or is there as i think a command you can enter once logged on to switch op the graphical mode?
i am fairly new to linux so please people keep the instructions simple

Thanks
Newbie but trying :study:

it could be graphics related, or it could be you simply set it to start in text mode during install. let's try to eliminate graphics first..........

at the login prompt, type your user name, then hit enter. type your password, hit enter again. type startx, hit enter. type startkde, hit enter. that should get you into KDE desktop. if it does, go to Mandrake control center->boot->drakboot & set up yourself for graphical login. you can also fine tune KDE related logins using Kontrol Center (IE: configure your desktop in the kicker menus)->system->login, using the administrator mode button to make changes.

if you can't get to a desktop via the above method, then please post back with your video card make/model & monitor info.
