Thumbs down harddrake detection error while machine is booting, firewire help, and shutdown error

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-GR300K that I have installed Linux Mandrake 9.1 on just recently. When booting up to the login I get an error about ismod in the boot up sequence during the harddrake detection. I checked the logs for the system and it displays only the following error in the log:

Modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-226

I wondered what this was about, so I thought I would ask.

I also get an error only when halting the machine, it doesn't happen on reboot. On the halt sequence that displays on the screen after it says "halt" or is it "shutdown"(whatever the last event is), it then displays an acpi error twice. It displays so fast on the screen I can't copy it down to post it here. I have ignored it because I thought, it wasn't hurting anything. Maybe somebody knows what that is about. ACPI has been set to load in lilo, and everything seems to work right in regard to ACPI when the machine is up and running. Perhaps someone can tell me how I can get that to stay on the screen or where to look so I can copy it down and post it here on the forum

I also have a question about Firewire. When I installed Mandrake 9.1 the autodetection of hardware at the beginning of the setup was unable to setup my IEEE Firewire. When install was done on the machine, I still didn't have firewire. What do I need to do to get my firewire working.

Thanks for your help

lets have a crack at 2 issues.
in mcc = mdk control centre you will find logs. It has a search function to search all logs, but so we don't take for ever, click on the box for today only and leave the search fields blank. But click on syslog. then see what the result is.

You can also go to /var/logs/ and search each file from there.

1) You are looking for initrd or kernel entries or module entries for firewire. Now this is likely to be a module if you are using a mdk kernel. I don't have one.

2) search for errors for today only with luck will show all the initial errors found by initrd or kernel on boot up. You are looking for what terms are used.

Now, because it is a mdk module kernel, it tries to be smart it see which modules to load, so it may be that the error is for hardware you don't have.

Anyhow have a look.

We are starting to look at 9.2 so you may find your errors are solved but if you find some terms you are not sure of, either do a google search or post back when you get a chance.
