Gonna Install Mandrake 9.1 if it KILLS me :)

Hola everyone,

I must first say that this is an awsome forum with tons of info (if you just take the time to search for it), however i am really getting my a$$ kicked with this install. I have heard nothing but godd things about the Mandrake install and how easy it is. To tell you the truth i had an easier time in Marine Corps Boot Camp (3 months) then getting this distro to install.

First off i downloaded the ISOs from www.linuxiso.org, which downloading that took a good minute. Then after i burned teh ISOs to disc (with no problem), i tried the install. Changed the boot sequence and off we went to a happier, windows free world; so i though. Well all goes well until i try to install the selected packages, and all i got was error after error; it would install a few and then stop and tell me that it cant read the disk, do you want to continue, so i say "yes" and off again but i still get the same error later with a different package. So i search around and find someone with the same problem and he had to replace the CD-ROM drive that he was using. I did so with a LiteON from circuit city. Well the first cd installed no problem but when i put the second in, it just did the same damn thing. I checked all the md5sums and they are good, discs are good as well. Kinda at my witts end with this, but i will prevail! If anyone can offer any help it would be greatly appericated.

ps i am running an AMD 1700XP with Windows XP on one HDD 60GB and i have another 60GB HDD to put Mandrake on. I have 256 DDR, and of course a few other odds and ends in the machine, which i am sure i iwll have problems with later :).

thanks everyone

There's no way that you could have DL'd those ISOs in a minute.

Guaranteed...you have bad CDs from that.

Do yourself a favor...wait a couple days and DL Mandrake 9.2 to install...as long as you don't have LG CDROM Drives.

If you do, go ahead with 9.1...but make sure you check the MD5SUMS to make sure you have good CDs.

OK, but did you check the MD5SUMs ?

I have gotten corrupted ISOs from people...even linuxiso.

And, clean your CDROM Drive, that is a common problem.

I have installed all of 9.1 and now am using it... i bought another CDROM and reburned all the CDs @ 8x. the only problem i had was the OpenOffice Help files didnt install, but who really cares about that... i think i am going to try OO1.1 any way... I do however appericate everyone help and again this board is awsome and i know i will have many more questions before it is all over with :)

Same problem here, but odd fix

Just fyi, I had the same problem also and im pretty sure its not the cd-rom drive, my fix was i just pushed the eject button and reinserted the same cd a couple of times and it worked. I did a little more digging and found out that the installer gets confused and forgets what it is looking for, thats why you are getting a cannot find package error and it probably tells you that the disc is corrupted. Just fyi for next time.

For me, I have two drives: one CD-RW and one DVD. I just popped in my CD in the other drive and it worked.

"a good minute"

maybe i took that to be slang, but in any case, here's where i got my mandrake 9.1 iso images

ftp://raven.cslab.vt.edu

and with the help of nero on a windoze machine using a late model burner, i got them burned rather quickly at 4800 rpm/32x or whatever which took little time.

no errors infact, i'm doing my 2nd machine install this morning with the same cd's.

downloading from the site is typically between 60 KBps to 100 KBps depending on what time of the day.

my guess is that you have a bad set of CDs but hang in there, you'll be glad that you did.

ps.
wish i had the chance to join the marines

also,

when you place a cd in the drive, give it a few seconds for the device to go thru it's scanning process before telling the mandrake installer to continue. burned cds, especially cdrw's have a tendancy to be bitches depending on the quality of your burner and/or using your freshly burned cd b 4 giving it a chance to cool off.

thats what works for me
