Garbled noise from speakers using Audigy

This is a strange one.
System's been up and running fine for the last few days, and when I booted this morning (I have to shut down the system overnight due to PC location) I got a garbled mess of a noise coming from my speakers. This happens at the desktop, and usually if there's nothing happening - ie, if I play an mp3 the noise goes away. Also tried rebooting, but with the same results.
I did a search and checked this thread. I followed motub's advice for checking the 'artsd' service, and it's enabled. I checked to see if this service is enabled at boot, it is.
I'm using an Audigy card under Mandy 10.0
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

i have a sb16 card, in alsamixer, try to mute the IEC958 channel if it exists

I've muted the IEC958 channel.
This seems to have sorted this out for the time being - if it happens again I'll post back.
Thanks for the advice.
