Fresh install - Sound works but only in some applications

Hi,
Just did a fresh install of Mandrake 10.0 on a brand new computer.
The sound is an onboard nForce 2 AC97 sound chip.
KDE system sounds (error beep, confirmation window, startup, shutdown etc.) all work. Also, playing an audio CD in Totem Media Player works fine.

Other programs don't play anything though. I tried using xmms to play a CD (it is my preferred music player) and it didn't make a sound. I have tried changing the Output Plugin to all four options (ALSA,OSS,aRts,eSound) and none of them seem to work.

Other programs that came pre-installed (random media players, can't remember their names) don't play anything either.

It just seems a bit strange that KDE and Totem can play sounds, but nothing else.

Any ideas on where to start fixing this?

Thanks

Robbie

do you have a direct cable connected from the cdrom drive to the sound card itself? if not, certain apps won't play CD's because they need a sound cable connection. KSCD won't play them no matter what you try. you can get xmms to work, though, with the proper plugin(s). i'm at work right now & unfortunately i can't remember the plugin(s) name(s) for xmms. but, it's easy enough to get them. go to Easy URPMI, follow the instructions to set up "contrib", "main", & "plf" sources. then use Mandrake Control Center->software management->install software & type xmms in the search. get all plugins for it you find. you might also want to to a search for codecs & get any of those you might be missing & need/want.

you'll need to then go to xmms preferences & choice your proper audio & video drivers & apply the settings.
