Fresh Install of Mandrake 10, ALSA not working
 

I had Reinstalled a clean copy of Mandrake 10.0 cause i tried to upgrade to beta and that didn't work, but thats another story. Anyways.......

After i set everything up. I noticed ALSA wasn't working with XMMS. So i tried updating to 1.0.6a (Not exactly sure how to check what version is currently installed, I'm stll very much a newbie, but I guess 1.0.2 from what alsaconf shows...) with no sucess. the driver would not work. Maybe I did something wrong, But I followed the install to the letter. Anyways, I was wondering how I can fix this. I'd use the OSS driver, but it crashes, and the esound plugin doesn't crash, but no sound is heard at all. The ALSA plugin outputs an error that I need to check if the sound card is properly configured, etc...

i tried running alsaconf but when I select the emu10k1 from the menu it outputs this.

i have a SBLIVE! 4 Channel Soundcard. and I also have to note that I tried to fix by taking and renaming the modules.conf.old to modules.conf, which sound now works, just not properly.

I'm a newb so sorry if I forgot any info you may need.

I had the same problem, it's probably the same cause and is a KDE problem, and not a Mandrake problem. You can follow the instructions at the following link or just read more about it:

Read the "Sound: System Notification sounds don't work, but other audio works." section, it is at the top of the page. If it looks a bit too technical for your present Linux skill level you might consider just using XMMS or another audio player for playing your system notifications. I'm not sure about a down side to doing it that way, but it worked for me until I found out about the knotifyrc bug and fix documented in the above link.

Here is what to do if you want to use XMMS for playing system notifications. In the KDE Control Center under Sound & Multimedia > System Notification there is a button titled "Player Settings" and when you click on it, it will open a window for selecting an external player for playing system notifications. Select the "Use external player" check box and pick your favorite player that you know will work. You can type it in or you can use the "Open file dialog" button on the right and navigate to where your application is located. For using XMMS it will probably be located at: /usr/bin/xmms but your mileage may vary.

The problem is not likely to be related to MyMiasma's solution.

The sound module loads occur well before KDE or even X are brought into the picture.

The errors that you posted normally indicate that you have a module being loaded which is incorrect for the kernel version currently being used.

I'd re-install the kernel and kernel-source RPM's for your current kernel (or go back to another version) and then remove the references to ANY and ALL sound drivers in /etc/modules.conf

Then cold boot your machine to permit kudzu to redetect the sound card.

Ooops, opjose is probably right, this answer was actually originally intended for another post and I am not sure why I thought it also applied to your problem. My solution only applies to folks that do have sound in other applications but is not working for KDE system notification. After looking at the time stamp on my post I claim sleep deprivation as my defense.
