:Pengy: Alright guys, im confused, i installed a nice fresh copy og 9.2 Download Editon, now ive run slackware, redhat, suse, knoppix, topagalinux etc, no problems whatsoever on my system, they boot right up, no software drivers needed nothing, everything works, problem is, this install, i boot right to a command prompt, its like LOCALHOST LOGIN: and i can log on, view the drive contents etc when normally it should goto KDE etc? it goes thru the loading screen like checking everything etc but wont goto a GUI or a command prompt? i was thinking maybe i gotta configure X or KDE or something? i dont know linux well, im new but i purchased a account with mandrake so i can use their distrubtion and it doesnt work =[ Computer specs are:
2500+, 512 DDR, ATi Radeon 9600 Pro, Dual 120gb WD drives (1 = windows, 2 = mandrake 9.2), hercules muse xl sound, dvd rom, cd burnder, ps2 keyboard, linksys lne100tx lan? HELP guys =[ i wanna use 9.2! |
um...type in startx
and your default gui should load (i think it'll be kde) and then you open your fav. text editor as root of course and edit the file etc/inittab (i like to jus open a runbox and type in "gedit /etc/inittab" but tahts me anway where it lists all the runtimes and what they do (first section) all those lines will be prefeixed with a # the line after that isn't and reads somethign like initrc:3:runinit change that 3 into a 5 and you will be all set of course that text is wrong..but it is like that...you must change it to a 5 for a gui, 3 is multi-user txt mode |
same problem, similar setup.
During the mandrake setup process, i tried to set up the graphical server thingy but it wouldnt work. Should i re-install and just tell it to use a generic AGP card and then install drivers for it later? |
yes, try just using vesa for your driver. if you can get to the console, edit xorg.conf or XF86config-4 and change the driver to "vesa" and then try intalling the proper driver later.
