Font display problem with some programs

I've got a problem with displaying the fonts generated by some programs in Mandriva 2007 Spring Free (running KDE 3.5). The programs causing problems are BOINC (used for the various @home projects) and gwhere. The problem is that the window generated by the program doesn't have the fonts displayed properly (probably best described as having the characters in words for menus etc squashed together). With gwhere there is no error message, but with the BOINC run manager the error messages

Gdk-WARNING **: Missing charsets in FontSet creation

Gdk-WARNING **: JISX0208.1983-0

Gdk-WARNING **: KSC5601.1987-0

Gdk-WARNING **: GB2312.1980-0

are produced before generating the window. Are these messages connected to the font display problem? Am I missing some packages? I should point out that these programs were fine with Mandriva 2006 Free running KDE 3.4.

In general font problems can occur because some applications uses the font settings of KDE and other applications uses the font settings from Gnome regardless of what window manager you are using. For example the font settings from Mozilla Firefox menus and toolbars come from the Gnome settings. If you don't have a full Gnome installation then I don't know what to do except to install all of Gnome and use the gnome-control-center application to control the fonts.

The errors that you showed confuse me a bit. I don't know what Gdk is but I know that Gnome uses the GTK engine.

That's all that I can think of.
