First time Log On Problem with Mandrake 10.0

Hello,

I installed mandrake linux 10.0 on my HP zt1130 laptop (1.13ghz processor 512 mb ram). Installation went fairly smoothly besides for a few errors along the way. One error stuck out, it was one that came up after creating the users (i forgot to write down the error). So anyways, then after installation is complete, I reboot and the boot loader comes up, I go into linux, after going loading all devices (PCMCIA etc.) a black screen comes up saying the following (where it would normally show the log on screen):
Mandrake Linux release 10.0 (Official) for i586
Kernel 2.6.3-7mdk on an i686 / ttyl
localhost login:

my username was jonathan so i typed that in. after asking for a password, i didnt have one so i pressed enter this came up: [jonathan@localhost jonathan}$

I installed linux several times after that, each time doing something different (such as creating a root password/user password) none worked. I know its not the cd's because it installed scucessfully and is working fine on an HP desktop (dual booted w/ windows). How can I fix my problem? you can email me at cementpond1@hotmail.com. Thank you.

Jon

P.S. If somebody reccomends another version of linux besides Mandrake, feel free to post or PM me, try to give me a good reason why also. I was going to try Suse, but preferably, I'd like to download it free and all I could download free on the Suse website was the live cd, which I do not want.

Try typing "startx" (without the quotes) after you've logged in.

Getting errors during installation is never a good thing though - shame you didn't write them down. If the startx command doesn't work and you get errors, make notes of them and post back and someone will, I'm sure, try and help you out.

Oh, and PM's don't work unless you make a cash contribution to the forum.

Start X

First, I'd Like to thank you for your quick response. startx did not work. I re-installed mandrake and wrote down the errors. Here they are:

a2ps.-4.13b-4mdk.i586
apache2.-2.0.48-6mdk.i586
cdialog-0.96-4mdk.i586
crack-attack-1.1.10-6mdk.i586
drakfirsttime-1.0-1mdk.noarch
ghostscript-module-x-7.07014mdk.i586
gimp-1.2.5-10mdk.i586
yelp-2.4.2-4mdk.i586
----
after adding user this is the error I received:

dhcp-common-3.0-1.rcl3.4mdk.i586
-------
then after trying to configure the graphics card I received this error:

xfree86-server-4.3-30mdk.i586

What do you think I should do? If you would like, as I'm installing I can take you step step and show you what I'm doing.

Thanks again,

Jon

To my knowledge, these aren't errors but packages that you're trying to install. gimp-1.2.5-10mdk.i586 for example, is an image editing program similar to Photoshop. Do these 'errors' have any extra dialogue to them? Like "can't install (blah) because of.....???"

Again, not an error but a package. This is a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol package. This is part of the network setup configuration and should be installed.

xfree86-server-4.3-30mdk.i586

This is part of the GUI interface, and a package that should already be installed. If it's asking you to install this package, then do so.

I think the first step to take would be to check your CD media - check for scratches etc.
Did you run the md5checksums for your downloads?
The official Mandrake download page is here and it also has the md5checksum info there too.
If you downloaded from another site then their info will probably be different and you should check with wherever you got your copy from.
If these checks don't turn out OK then you're going to have to download whichever CD didn't check out OK.

Post back when you've done some checking.
