There are a number of programs that came installed with Mandrake that just flat out won't run. find the program in the "start" bar, open the program, it appears in the start bar at the bottom, loads, and then dissapears, the program doesn't appear, it just dissapears from the start bar after not showing up.

I also can't get a number of office programs to start,

And whenever I attempt open the system configuration, it just ignores my Microsoft USB intellimouse, and my generic USB keyboard.

KDE/Gnome comes with links to a large set of programs, even if you don't have these programs installed, the links are still there. Perhaps these links you're clicking on point to programs that you didn't choose to install when you were picking packages during setup.

Just because a title bar shows up in your task tray dosn't mean that the program is loading, or that it even exists.

Yes, and even then some of these programs ARE there but are being run under the wrong environment or with wrong permissions.

When in doubt open a console and type the name of the program in followed by return to run it..

e.g.

gxine [enter]

You'll be able to see error messages and reasons as to why it failed to launch or why it terminated prematurely.

For xine and some others you have to load the GLcore and dri modules in the XF86Config-4. Just edit and restart your xwindows. Had the same problem with xine.

I was frustrated by this same problem with my first Mandrake install. At that time I had only installed the KDE interface without Gnome.

I had to reinstall Mandrake at one point (for other reasons) and went ahead and installed Gnome with KDE. I also installed all development tools.

I found that this fixed all problems with programs starting. Also, compiling programs from scratch was real easy too.

I tried reinstalling and it just made things even worse, but now that you mention it, I did not have both KDE and Gnome selected and I did not have the development tools checked.

Seems pretty buggy that this should make a difference.:confused:

I'm new and pretty disappointed with all the trouble I had with 10.1 Official on a plain-vanilla machine. I may try again later after I've seen more information on getting it installed and working without tears.

What he told you is fairly applicable for a no-tears install.

Mandrake favors Gnome, but succumbs to the momentum behind KDE.

So you really have to install both, just to use one.
