file and print sharing
I have a dual boot desktop running Windows Xp and Mandrake 9.2. I have a dual boot laptop running Windows Xp and Mandrake Community 10.1. Everything works fine when I am in a totally windows environment. What I am having trouble with is file and print sharing when both comnputers are in Linux.

The desktop has a Samsung 1710 laser printer attached to it. I can print from the desktop when I am in Linux. What I am having trouble with is that when I attach the network cable to the laptop I cannot see the files in my Linux home directory on the desktop nor can I print to the desktop printer from the laptop. I have a router that assigns addresses.

Is there a simple way to accomplish file and print sharing using the GUI tools in Mandrake? Am I missing something obvious? None of the GUI tools in Mandrake or KDE seem to accomplish my purpose. I've tried them.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Finlay.

I'll give this NFS thing a try.

as for printing, look at CUPS

Hi Finlay

I got file sharing working using NFS. Not much security but it's just a home network.

Now to CUPS.

Hi Again Finlay:

Just got printer sharing working using CUPS. I guess us non technical types just need a little encouragement.

Many thanks.

now that you are working you can look at using samba to do both. but it is used more often to network with windows machines, it will work between linux boxes
