Failure messages when booting OS

When I start my Mandrake 10 system I have noticed a couple of new failure messages when the OS is starting up.
1) Mounting local file systems mount:no medium found
mount:no medium found - FAILED
2) starting dm -FAILED
Does anyone know what these messages mean and how to set things right? My PC SEEMS to be working OK.
I recently could not eject a CD from a DVD drive and used the umount command from a terminal as root to eject it. This may be related but I'm not sure.

Totally unrelated question - HardDrake does not show my modem in its hardware list, but the modem is present and works, why is this so?

You can't eject CDs/DVDs without umounting them. That's not a bug, it's a feature. The mount:No medium found error probably means that it's trying to mount your cd-rom or dvd-rom drive, but you don't have a disk in there. To remedy this, open /etc/fstab in your favorite editor and find the line that points to your CD-ROM drive; on my computer it's
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro 0 0
I'm guessing that your line doesn't have noauto in the fourth column (the options column). noauto means don't automatically mount it; only mount it when you say mount /path/to/cd. So take noauto out
