Failed to initialize Nvidia kernel module - stopping X from starting Mandrake 10

Okay, I'll get down to the nitty gritty...no need to beat around the bush as it were.

My computer was running 100% okay with Mandrake 10. Life was good. Internet was plenty. Then I had a roommate move in, and want to use things through a router. No problem thought I.
So we connected the router, and everything seemed to work on his end. On my end however, Mandrake refused to start 'x', instead dumping me to terminal at start.
Attempts to 'startx' within my standard kernel result in the following error message:
Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module
Aborting
Unload module : "Nvidia"
Unload module : "vgahw"
Unloading : /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvbahw.a
Screen(s) found but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error:
No screens found.

So, can't boot with my standard kernel....worked around that temporarily by using the 'failsafe' kernel, but now my CD drive isn't doing anything in so far as supermounting or reading the disc...but regardless...I shouldn't BE using failsafe...

Any idea how to fix my 'standard' kernel, such that I can startx? And yes, I did my best to alter the network config....it seems to work somewhat under 'failsafe', which is what I'm doing this under...but attempting to fiddle with any configuration under Mandrake Control Center equates to a crash of sorts.

ANY and all help would be greatly appreciated, and as soon as possible, so I can fix this.

Thanks in advance.

Does it give any reasons for failing to initialise the nvidia module? What happens if you try "modprobe nvidia"? You could always try reinstalling the nvidia kernel module.

In addition to spuzzzzzzz's reply, have you checked your XF86Config(-4) file? Under Section "Device", is the driver "nvidia"?

And what happens when you do a modprobe vgahw in addition to modprobe nvidia?

Do you have the nvidia and vgahw modules listed in /etc/modprobe.preload?

Also, check your /var/log/XF86Config.0.log (<-I believe that's the one) and see if there are any errors, e.g. (EE) for the nvidia module.

From a prompt type

X --probeonly

and see what it tells you.
