Extremely slow internet Mandriva 2007
 

Hello,

I've just started using Mandriva One 2007, and I was so excited when just a couple of clicks was enough to get my wireless card working. But apparently that was just too good to be true.

With my wireless card (broadcom 1300, or dell truemobile 1300 if you prefer) active, all the networks are recognized... but they also are all "100%" signal strength, which i know is not true. When i connect to my router (about 5 feet away from my computer), it claims 100% strength, but all websites are very slow to load -- if they load at all.

Its odd though, because if i ping either my router or google.com, i get a response with little to no packet loss, and with a perfectly normal response time.

I also have tried deleting the BCM drivers that Mandriva automatically installed and using ndiswrapper with the bcmwl5.inf file, but that did not work. Also, when i "deleted" the BCM wireless card, it still appeared in my network interfaces, even after a reboot.

I don't know if there is more information that would be helpful, but let me know. Here is a snapshot of the hardware in the equation:

Mandriva 2.6.17-5mdvlegacy
Dell Inspiron 5100 (Pentium 4 2.66G dual boot winXP pro)
Dell Truemobile 1300 b/g (broadcom 1300)
D-Link DI-624S router as access point to below: (but i connect to this one)
ActionTec GT701-WG Router / DSL modem

ps - if you're curious, yes i did copy this from the Newbie thread; no one answered after several days and over 50 views, so i figured i should try i here. Oh, and wireless works fine in winXP..

Does a direct Ethernet (Cat5) connection work slow in Mandriva as well?
Is the Wireless setup as DHCP?
When using Wireless you have disabled the Ethernet port? as it can cause slow reaction times.
First it'll check if the ethernet port can find the website, then Wait until it times out then try wireless

DHCP is setup, and works fine with windows. Lately i've started using a static IP in windows, which also works without any problems.

I've also tried having Ethernet exclusively, and wireless exclusively, but neither that, or both at once, worked any better than the problem initially described.

in that case you need to completely rewrite the entire Thread Title
since Ethernet and wireless are both slow it may be a unique mandriva networking problem.

and only mandriva users will be helpful

edit -- i changed the title, but in the Mandriva thread its still showing up as the original title. Emptied my internet cache, but no change..

Report your post and ask for the thread title to be changed.

Check your System Services in the MCC and see if Clam AV or Klam AV is running. On my new install, this service started on bootup and was trying to update Clam. It killed my Internet speed.

I did try changing some things -- when Gnome loaded up, it said that no internet devices had been configured. Confused, i started going through the steps of enabling my wireless (ethernet is unplugged except for troubleshooting attempts) card using ndiswrapper.

As soon as i selected the ndiswrapper method, i was warned it was already in use -- and sure enough, suddenly i was connected to the internet via my BCM94306 card. Not really sure how or why that happened, but so be it.
I tried to finish configuring my ndiswrapper card, but it was warned that "firmware files are required for this device" and it pointed me to http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/m...index.php/list

Punched the address into Firefox, went to be washroom and came back to find it loaded the whole page. Found my Dell Truemobile 1300 card, clicked on the link, and it started downloading R81433.exe from dell.com. Thats fine, but i already have downloaded that file and extracted the .inf and .sys files, and have them sitting on my Mandriva desktop -- with ndiswrapper supposedly linked to them.

Either way, when i was downloading, it took about 5 retries to get it started, and it was going at 0.8kbps for about 10 seconds before stalling out.

Any more ideas?

edit - btw, downloading that file via Windows i was going between 90kbps and 160kbps
