What distribution are you using?
Do you want to kill the X server, or simply leave the desktop?

what does that mean? sorry im new to linux and i am trying to update my video drivers and dont know how to exit the X server.
Help is greatly appreciated.

$ su

CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE also exits X.
