Everything locked to toolbar
 

Hi,
When I'm on the Gnome desktop and open any package, whether it be a terminal window, Mozilla Firefox ,Nautilus or anything else, the package opens "locked" (attached") to the main system toolbar. I can't drag it anywhere else or move it in any way.
Does anyone know if this is a bug or something that needs changing in an options menu somewhere?

When I am logged in as a user in Fedora Core 6, I can't access certain directories that as a user I do not have permission to do anything in or with that directory, such as /root/ directory which is the Administrator's home. Through the file browser there will always be a picture of a lock on this folder letting me know I have no access.
Now I'm not sure based on the vague description you give regarding your dilemma, but if you see an actual picture of a lock, means you may not have permission.
Does this happen when you log in as root?

The problem is quite hard to explain. Imagine the desktop with your main system tool bar on it. In my case it is horizontally across the top of the screen. I click on the mozilla firefox icon (could be konsole or anything else) on this toolbar. Firefox opens attached to the toolbar, obscuring all of the shortcuts that are on the tool bar. It is impossible to drag Firefox to a different part of the screen. It is as if it is glued to the toolbar. Strange.....

I've seen this before, in Windows, not Linux, what I had to do in windows was to right click on the taskbar (toolbar as you call it) and alter taskbar settings. Because I do not install Gnome I'm not sure which route you would need to take to alter taskbar settings...perhaps through a "Control Center/Desktop/Taskbar" which is where I would go in KDE.

OK, this is an edit,
I took a good look in my KDE control center and there is a radio button you could select that will do that, it is in: Control Center/Desktop/Panels/Hiding and the line after the "un-selected" radio button on mine says: ALLOW OTHER WINDOWS TO COVER PANEL. I think this would be what I would select to acheive what ails you in gnome, as to why you can't move a window off even after minimizing it has me slightly puzzled at this moment but I suggest you go through desktop settings in your Gnome control center or what ever configuration unit it has.

I had this problem a few times when using Compiz on 2007, never had it with LE2005 though - dragging the titlebar did nothing, but right clicking & selecting Move worked fine. Another nail in the coffin for Compiz, for me anyway.
