Error when formating partition during install of Mandriva 2008 x64

I am doing an install of Mandriva 2008 instead of an upgrade since I didn't have any success with that and want to start clean. However, when I get to the partition step I get an error.

An error occurred
Can't call method "val" on an undefined value.

I have tried the Use Existing Partitions option and the Custom Disk Partitioning option where I delete the partion and create it again. I also used the Advanced option to check for bad blocks. The disk also contains an XP install. Any suggestions on how to get this working?

Hi, try it in stages.

remove all the linux partitions.

It will write to the MBR.

Now go back and set up your partitions.

Try that, hope it helps.

Oh, good.

If I remember correctly, that's how I did it too.

Hi, Hasancan85, Welcome to LQ!

So much has happend since 28-06-2008, could you describe the error again, please.

Where it occurs and what options you have after.

I think you will need to have at least 2 partitions for Linux, swap and /

But you'd be better off having 3 /home, swap and root (/)

Your /home partition will be the bigger than the others.

If you have 2Gb of ram, a small swap will do (1Gb max) as it will be used less.
up to 3 gig for / (proportionately, depends on your HD size)

and the rest for /home

Back to your problem,

If you create the partitions with the Mandriva cd, and it writes to the mbr, turn off the PC.

Next time the Mandriva cd boots, the partitions should be there, if not, it is some other type of error.

Note, you could do this with ubcd or system-rescue cd.

The errors I generally get are that the disks can't be found, to write the mbr.

I have sata disks, and use uhci (in bios).

If this is ON, switch to sata-ide, and try again.

Once the system is installed, switch the bios back to use uhci for sata.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Glenn
