Error installing Mandrake 10.0

I'm using a purchased copy of the disks and I've installed the OS a couple of times before, so I know things should be working properly, but for some reason they aren't this time. When I try to install from scratch, even if the truly minimal install I get messages such as:

There was an error installing packages:
kdebase-common-3.2-79mdk.i586
Go on anyway?

If I click yes and continue, I get the same massages for mandrakegalaxy..., Perl-HTML-Parser..., and some others

This has never happened on the previous installs, any help getting this install done would be great, so I can get off my work comp. and go home to my own

You CD reader is likely dying or "binding" searching for particular tracks or your disks are scratched or bad.

Disks are new... no scratches and such. I did eventually realize that I always installed Linux on a hard drive that was previously running some form of windows, not one that already had Mandrake on it. I tried installing WinXP Lite early this morning and then Mandrake over the now Windows NTFS formatted drive. That worked without error. Everything's fine now, but it would be nice to know why Mandrake is only able to properly install itself this way.

edited to thank you for your reply

Hmm... maybe the installer is having difficulty with the way you have partitioned things out for Linux.

Linux has it's own harddrive. It gets the whole thing to partition as it needs during install.

Then you either have a "braindead" CD/DVD reader or there are communication problems of some sort over the IDE bus.

In effect Linux is not able to read the files from the CD during installation.

You may want to try temporarily setting the CD rom's xfer mechanism to PIO and see if this helps.
