error getting the GUI

i've just finished installing mandrake 9.1 on a SONY laptob model(PCG GRZ610) with (XGA TFT screen) and when booting I will go directly to the console, why doesnt it go to GUI instead of console, when i type in startx as a command it will give an error regarding the the above, please help me!!!!!!!!!!

your vga is not configured properly.
try xconfig in console...

please post the exact error you are getting. Also as root edit your /etc/inittab file

make sure it says this:

# The default runlevel is defined here
id:5:initdefault:

but first set up your vga display. Make sure you have your laptop manual so you know what video card you have along with your max resolution (when in doubt, use 800x600 16 bit), and your Hz and Khz frequencies.

I had that problem on a DELL pentium 2. It would just go in to a cosole on startup. All I did was reinstalled two more times and it worked
