DVD Ripper "Handbrake" for Mandriva
Hey guys I wanted to share this with our board for those of you that may be interested in trying this as an educational tool or for your own private use.
I have found a DVD Ripper called "Handbrake" that works beautiful with Mandriva Linux. It took me about a week to figure out, but it allows you to rip your personally owned DVD's and converts them to an MPEG4 file, which allows you to watch on ipods or your personal computer. I recall I had to install "jam" program and a program named "NASM" and a few lib programs. I was able to finally figure out how to install, run handbrake on Mandriva 2006 Linux. My main problem was I was trying to use the "ripper" as "super user" and all I had to do is run as "regular user". Rip quality was excellent and outstanding! download here: http://handbrake.m0k.org/mirrors/m0k...e-0.7.0.tar.gz d-1 |

I haven't tried Handbrake yet. But if you URMPI dvdshrink from the PLF. Then change the Mjepgtools to the last stable release. It will only take about two minutes to be up and running. A really great program that works seamlessly with K3B.

I tried to install dvdshrink and got transcode error on install and was unable to install. I then tried to install transcode and got error as well. Don't know why.

Ok I ran updates and was able to install "dvdshrink".
Can you gave an example or generic tutorial on how to run dvdshrink to make an mpeg file from a dvd? d-1 |
Here is what happened when I tried to use DVD Shrink: I got an errro, any hints?

DVDshrink
I am sorry that you are not able to get Dvdshrink to work. I had it up and running on LE2005 after I got the Mjpegtools figured out. I looked tccat and it is part of Transcode. Was it loaded with Handbrake? I would think that it would be as Transcode is an essential for almost all Linux ripping programs that I have seen. Maybe there is someone else out there that can help.

I've tried dvdshrink with mixed results - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and I have to boot into Windows (yuck! :)) and use the Windows dvdshrink. I've had mjpegtools problems with other things that I've solved by getting the Mjpegtools RPM from cooker (mjpegtools1.8) and installing it with rpm --nodeps, I'm not sure how well this helps dvdshrink (haven't tried it for a while).
dolphans1 the dvdshrink RPM puts an entry in the menus for you, but if that hasn't shown up the command for the GUI is xdvdshrink.pl (/usr/bin/xdvdshrink.pl). You can accept all the defaults and just click start. |
I have used DVD::Rip for a long time now. It has not ever failed to give me a great rip and encode. I use Xvid and have the Xvid.conf installed. It allows you to tweak Xvid for just the right settings. Loading it is pretty simple. Although I think plf has goofed on the package for 2006. I use the package for 2005 and let urpmi pick all the other dependencies from the 2006 tree. It works Great. I just did Fantastic 4 for the kids this weekend. If you're interested I have a How-To on my sight.
The great thing about DVD::Rip is it will let you encode into just about any format you want. PDR60 |
