DVD Download Question
 

I want to try Mandraaake for the first time. So I downloaded Mandrakelinux-10.1-Official-Download-DVD.i586.iso.part

It's 2.0 GB in size just as it should be. But notice that the ".part" didn't go away when the download finished. Am I supposed to remove it myself? I thought it automatically "fell-off" when the download completed. At least that's how other downloaded iso files have behaved. My burner will not recognize that it's an iso unless .iso is on the end.

md5sum doesn't match so it's a bad download. If I remove ".part" do you think md5sum will then match?

I thought maybe it wasn't finished downloading so I tried to resume. It says that I have a 2.0 GB file already and I should resume. But when I try to resume received an error message that said " The process for the protocol died unexpectantly"

I tried different servers but its the same thing with all of them.

This took an extremely long time to download I hope I haven't wasted my time. I don't want to burn if it ainn't gonna work cause DVD aren't cheap!

Has anyone experienced this problem?

A .part suffix indicates that the download has NOT completed.

What you are saying indicates that you did not get a proper download.

Try using an FTP client with a resume feature, such as gFTP and tell it to resume the download.

If it is unable to close the file out, either the file is corrupt, or you have other problems on your network, typically MTU mismatches cause this.

You are correct. The download didn't finish. I found the problem.

First of all the download for the DVD is actually more than 2.0 GB. It's about 2.1 GB. Interestingly Konqueror web browser, which I am using, apparently limits downloads to 2.0 GB unless memory usage is not minimized. To unlimit memory usage I had to open the browser and do this:

Settings>Configure Konqueror>Performance >Minimize Memory Usage

and choose "Never".

After changing the memory usage I was able to resume the download.

Turns out that I had about 10 minutes of download remaining. After that the ".part" automatically dissappeared and the md5sum matched.

Thanks for the hint about gFTP. I have been searching for something like this. I will use it next time I have a huge ftp download.
