dual monitor problems

'glxinfo | grep render' indicated nvidia driver not properly installed.
installed it and am having problems. install indicated it went ok but now
system boots to command line. i've switched back to my original xorg.conf
file and changed the 'driver' setting from 'nv' to 'nvidia'. that works but is
only a single monitor setup.

using my attempted dual monitor xorg.conf file 'glxinfo | grep render' now
yields:

Code:
error: unable to open display (null)
startx yields a variety of errors:

Code:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failure to construct a valid modes list: no modes remaining.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

Fatal server error:
no screens found

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
then i'm back at my root prompt. here's the xorg.conf i'm using when i get these
errors.

Code:

never mind. got it working. this post was very helpful:

http://linuxfornewbies.org/forum/ind...opic,21.0.html

as were the irc folks at #lfd on freenode.

here's the xorg.conf that worked. possibly the main thing that made thingsa work
was the change in the 'virtual' settings in the 'screen' section.

Code:
# File generated by XFdrake.

# **********************************************************************
# Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of
# this file.

Section "Files"

    # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of
    # the X server to render fonts.
    FontPath "unix/:-1"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
    #DontZap # disable <Crtl><Alt><BS> (server abort)
    #DontZoom # disable <Crtl><Alt><KP_+>/<KP_-> (resolution switching)
AllowMouseOpenFail # allows the server to start up even if the mouse does not work
EndSection
