Dual monitor problem -maximum virtual size

I am using a Radeon X1200 dual head graphics card to support two monitors. It automatically installs just fine. I have a problem in that
one monitor is 2048x1536 and the other is 1280x1024. If I configure the Monitor preferences to put the screens side by side it balks saying I requested 3328x1536 and the maximum virtual size is 2058x2058. How can I increase the maximum virtual size so that I get the new screen real estate? Right now the smaller monitor screen is displayed on both screens (full on the smaller monitor, and as a postage stamp overlaying the same background on the larger monitor)

help me please!
John

You need an xorg.conf file with at least a Screen Section and Display SubSection, something like this:

Code:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device    "Videocard0"
        DefaultDepth    24
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport  0 0
                Depth    24
                Virtual 3328 1536
        EndSubSection
EndSection

I tried it.

All of it was already there except the Virtual line.
Virtual 3328 1536

I put that in, but then Xwindows wouldn't load, and it dumped me into the CLI.
It runs fine at these resolutions under windows. (It is a dual boot system)

Sounds like you added a typo somewhere to your xorg.conf file. You'll have to try starting X with that Virtual line in there, and then show us the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file that is generated so we can figure out what's wrong.
