Dual booting Win2k and Mandrake 10.1

My work harddisk recently bit the dust. I had to do the freezer trick and a hammer to get my files off of it and now it is a permanent gonner.

I now have a blank 80GB IDE drive. I would like to install Win2k and Mandrake 10.1 on this 1 IDE drive. I have never done this with 1 drive(I always used 2 drives and chose in Bios which drive to boot).

What is the easiest way to do this? I know it involves partitioning the drive with both Ext3 and NTFS, but which OS controls the booting (lilo or NTLDR)? If any one knows a simple way please point me at it. I use many W2k programs that there is no Linux equivalent for, but I will primarily use Linux for day to day stuff.

Thanks,
Brian

always install Windows XP FIRST!

During the Windows instsallation, you will be given the option to partition the drive. Split it into two partitions and install Windows on one partition and Linux on the other partition.

Install Windows first. Partition the drive so WIndows/ntfs gets the first parition. You don't need to worry much about the remainser of the drive, yet, if you don't want to.

Once WIndows is installed and running, boot your Mandrake Installation CD. When you come to the partitioning step, it will recognize that Windows has the first partition. You should be able to tell it to use the remaining space on the disk for Mandrake (you may have to do a *custom* partitioning to make it work; it's been quite a while for me. )

Let LILO handle the booting - install it to the MBR when the question is asked. It will recognize the WIndows partition and include it in the options.

Just wanted to let you guys know that your suggestions worked. I have not yet needed to go into Windows many times yet as Wine and Crossover Office have been working great for nearly everything so far along with smb4k to share resources. I just use Windows for Atmel developement stuff and the rest I do under Linux. I set up a 10G Fat32 portal so both OS's can talk to each other (Since Windows is only NTFS).

When iTunes or something like it runs without spending 100's of $$ on VMware then I know a few other M$ Windows users who will be converting to Mandrake. This Version of Mandrake has been great, especially once I got urpmi set up.

Re: Itunes...

Itunes works well in Mandrake 10.1 using Codeweavers Crossover Office, for me.

It's installable (automatically) from the Crossover menu.

Wow, really? Will it access the iPod through the USB port? That is key for most. If so then that kicks arse. I am traveling this week and will try it with my iPod when I get back. I like codeweavers cxoffice more everyday! I recommend it for any recovering Windows users. Photoshop, M$ Office, IE, and other programs run well under cxoffice. It costs $ but is well worth it.
