I've just added a windows install to my computer, and as a result the Linux HDD is now hdb, with my storage HDD as hdc (rather than hda and hdb respectively).
I'm trying to edit the /etc/fstab and the grub config files so that i can boot into the system again, but i've come accross a couple of problems. I'm using Damn Small Linux to mount the drives and edit them.
1) I can mount every drive, but i can't access the storage drive (hdc). It'll mount, but when i say 'ls' it tells me 'access denied'. Does it need to be accessed with another MDV install? I've tried asking su, but it needs a password, and i can't find any info on the root password for a live CD.
2) It won't let me edit the /mnt/hdb/etc/fstab file. Apparently 'fstab-sync' is used to edit it, but i can't find a man page for it, nor any mention anywhere....
3) I can't find a grub.config file in /mnt/hdb/boot/. The two config-looking files i found are called 'config' and 'config-2.6.11-6mdk' but neither are editable, nor do they seem to have any paths in.
Any ideas?
Cheers!
Avi.

- Did you add a new hard disk to your system?.
- What did you try to edit these config files?
- Is grub still working (it gives you a command lines)?
Please answer these so that anyone can help you.
You need to be root to mount partitions, read their contents and edit the files on the mounted drives unless /etc/fstab stipulates that you can do this as a normal user. Most distros don't use grub.config, they use /boot/grub/menu.lst.
- I have added a new hard drive to the system. It is now IDE0, what was at IDE0 is now IDE1, and IDE1 has gone to IDE2.
I tried using Nano to edit the files
The boot loader is still working. It's very graphical, and i can see no option on there for a command line. The only reason i think it's grub is because of the prescence of the /boot/grub/ folder.
Will try 'root' as su password. Why didn't i think of that before?....
