i decided i loved linux enough to put it on one of my good computeres. its a computer i use for lan parties so it had to have windows, so i figured id just put in another hd and put mandrake on it. so i downloaded the newest madrake (the gods of broadband) and burnt the iso. i then tried to install madrake as the master hd with the windows being slave, it wouldnt even recognize the other hd and i didnt want to risk hurting the windows. so i just disconected the other hd and went ahead with the other hd and the instalation went perfectly. i love the user friendly install that mandrake has. i then re-started, and played around in linux for awhile, then halted the system. i put back in the other hd, the one containing windows, and it just came up to insert boot cd. no windows, no linux. i then decided to troubleshoot and took the linux out and tried it again, windows booted perfectly. now i hear lilo is supposed to recognize both os's, but i cant get it to work right. here's my specs
an epia-m 933 ghz board
80 gig hd windows
20 gig hd linux
1 round dual ide cable, so 1 is master and 1 is slave.
anybody got any suggestions that could aid in my run here? i want to be able to take this to lan parties and do windows, then switch to linux and fuck with other peoples machines. but eh well, any help would be nice.
Check the jumpers on the drives. It sounds like maybe both drives are master. Even if they are set to cable select go ahead and change the jumpers to make the 80G master and the 20G slave.
okay, i messed with it a bit, and i put the windows hd as master and the linux as slave, and the windows itself booted. i could switch in the bios which hd to boot from, and thats been working fine. i want to know what kind of program i need to be able to select from the os's. so i can easily switch between linux and windows. lilo, supposedly what is working, gives me the 4 options for linux to boot, but i dont see the windows anywhere. ill work on it some more, try and configure lilo some. eh well. what did you mean by setting the jumpers?
Windows is not an option in lilo because the drive was disconnected when you installed Mandrake. But you're on the right track. Just add Windows to lilo </etc/lilo.conf> and you should be able to boot into either OS. Be sure to run lilo <lilo> after you make the changes so that they will take effect.
