DSL-connection is much slower than in windows
I'm a linux newbie using Mandrake 10.0 Community with KDE.
I have a DLS internet connection, my ethernet card is connected with a router, the router is connected with the DSL-modem.
Using Mandrake 10, I had internet access right from the start, but the connection speed appears slower to me than while runnig windows (I'm not a native speaker, please excuse my poor english..):
When I download larger files via http I have rates of about 80 KB/s, which is fine and as fast as it was in winndows, but using ftp my downloads never went faster than max. 25 K.
Also BitTorent appears much slower to me, in windows I had rates of about 55 K max., and running linux I only get rates of 22 K max.
In the Mandrake Control Center my connection is defined as "lan-connection", choosing "ADSL-connection" requires password and username, but the router provides these things to my provider.

When I type "ifconfig", I get:
eth0 Protokoll:Ethernet Hardware Adresse 00:40:F4:7C:9D:99
inet Adresse: Bcast: Maske:
RX packets:109021 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:127338 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
RX bytes:49025128 (46.7 Mb) TX bytes:53328816 (50.8 Mb)

lo Protokoll:Lokale Schleife
inet Adresse: Maske:
RX packets:1280 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:1280 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
RX bytes:533322 (520.8 Kb) TX bytes:533322 (520.8 Kb)

"route" gives me:
Kernel IP Routentabelle
Ziel Router Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface * U 0 0 0 eth0 * U 0 0 0 lo
default UG 0 0 0 eth0
As you will probably guess, my IP is, the router has .

Do you have any idea why my connection is slower than in windows?
Thanks for your help.

This question comes up alot when people switch to Mandrake 10. If you are using the 2.6 kernel add the following line to /etc/modprobe.conf :

alias net-pf-10 off

I think you have to reboot after adding this to get the speedup. Also if you use harddrake to reconfigure your hardware sometimes modprobe.conf gets reinitialized and you have to do this again.

I boot the kernel

I tried your advice, but I didn't change anything.
Any other idea?
Thanks + greetings

I found the solution, a user of a german Mandrake-forum told it to me:

I changed the MTU-size with

ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492
(as "root")

After that the FTP-speed was 4x as high.
Greetings and thanks for giving me advice!
