Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods

Hi there, it's been a while since I posted. Well, I have this problem:

My harddisk broke and I was left diskless in my laptop. So I decided to install Mandriva Free into my USB Flash Disk I just bought (8GB generic one). When I start the installation, the process states that there is no valid installation device:

"An error occurred - no valid devices were found to create new filesystems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem."

Ok, so I did a dmesg from there and found this line:

PHP Code:
Driver 'sd' needs updating please use bus_type methods
Weird I thought, since this is Mandriva 2008.1, the latest version. Well, perhaps Mandriva One will work.

So I went to One, and it hangs and gives the same message if I boot with the Flash disk connected; so I decided to connect it AFTER KDE was up and running. Whenever I do this, it works perfectly, as a Flash Disk. It mounts and reads the FAT32 stuff. BUT, dmesg shows the following:

PHP Code:

So I was wondering, perhaps there is something weird with the kernel drivers for my flash disk, or is my flash disk broken? Live install gives the same "An error occurred - no valid devices were found to create new filesystems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem." message, and I can't install.

What could be the problem, and what possible solutions do you guys think would be best for it?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have not tried to install mandriva on to a flash drive/stick, but I have installed slax that way.

But the process is different, with slax, the live cd image is copied to the flash drive and a line or two are changed for the boot sequence (boot from usb flash instead of ide cdrom).

Also, booting from usb-flash drives is for usb2.0, not usb1.1/1.0 machines (motherboards).

You might have some luck searching for "frugal install" (as in "less or economic install").

This may be "a bit dated"...

the slax method may be usefull...

The difference between Slax for CD and Slax for USB

Both the variants are exactly the same. The only difference is in the distribution format. ISO is prepared for people who need a bootable CD. TAR is for people who need to extract the contents to disk. But as mentioned, the Slax inside is completely the same. You don't need to download Slax for USB if you have the ISO and you know how to extract it's content. Also, you don't need to download ISO, if you have tar and you know how to make a bootable CD from it.

I know there is a mandriva flash version but I haven't tried to get it.

My flash drive is only 256Mb, so mandy is too big for my hardware specs. .

Cheers, Glenn

p.s. I also get the sd error, with or without the usb drive inserted, while the kernel is detecting the hardware, but the system runs fine.
