drakboot's settings don't stick, can't get .xinitrc to run
I'm trying to get my mandrake install to automatically login to a user using fluxbox as its wm as well as launch a few apps, but I haven't gotten any of that to work...
Right now, it automatically logins to the user using icewm. I've tried running bootdrak under root, but no mater what I change the settings to, they don't stick - when I open up bootdrak again, they're back to what they were before. Strangely, bootdrak seems to think that it's set up to not automatically login...
Also, I'd like some dockapps to startup with fluxbox so I put them in my .xinitrc (which I had to make). I also put in a line to "startfluxbox," but since the login goes to icewm, I'm guessing .xinitrc isn't being run. I've chmod'ed the file to 700 as the user, so permissions aren't the problem...
Is there something I need to edit in startx so that fluxbox starts up instead of icewm? What do I need to do to get the dockapps I put in the .xinitrc running?
On a sidenote, whenever I exit a windowmanager, the screen on the laptop goes black with grey horizontal lines. In the top right corner is a white spot that gradually grows bigger as the whole screen turns white - it kinda looks like someone's burning a whole in my screen... is this normal? Eventually (after the whole screen's white), it's return to the graphical login.
Edit your /etc/inittab file and change the line for the default runlevel to be the number that corresponds to "Full multiuser mode". You will boot to command line, then startx will read your .xinitrc file. Change the <N> to the correct number, the file is well commented.
strange... not sure how i did it but now when the laptop boots up it automatically logs in as the user and seems to run the .xinitrc fine.
but if i log out it goes to a console login. once i login in again, it doesn't load any window manager (so it's not running the .xinitrc)... so i tried running startfluxbox, doesn't work.
if i run startx, it goes to a graphical login menu (how did i get logged out to log back in again?) and when i login in there it goes to icewm (so definitely not running the .xinitrc).
not sure how booting up has the .xinitrc run but not logging in from a console...
