Download vs Power Pack
 

Can somebody please explain the difference between the download version and the Power Pack for mandrake 10 official, I was thinking of getting the download version but was wondering if I should bite the bullet and buy a copy of the Power Pack.

Check out this page for the info that you should see. Notice it says a four cd set. I downloaded and burned my own ISO's for Mandrake 10 myself. But upon the install, I did notice something that no one said anything about. While Mandrake was giving it's own message about itself while installing the chosen packages, there was one screen that said, that there were no drivers for the broadband or for the ATI ot NVidia video cards in the download version of the software.

Which is why when purchasing it, we get four CD's instead of only three, like for the ISO files that we downloaded. It is my assumption that those missing drivers are on that fourth CD. The things listed in the power pack can be gotten easy enough via using the URPMI in a terminal for everything else that you would like to have. If you are thinking that I may just be penny pinching, you are right, for I am on a VA Pension, and need to squeeze the max out of every buck. The only other documentation that is in the power pack is what you already know as a basic beginner. Not much more, as I did have the power pack from another version of Mandrake and was kind of disappointed by it. I already knew everything that was in there, from self-study on the web with various tutorials and forums like this one.

So save your money, and get this version here. It has basically everything you need to get started and you can download the rest. Heh, heh, just have a large enough drive when you do decided to download, as I did fill up my /usr partition on the last version. LOL Sooo many rpm's and no space left at the /usr inn. LOL

If your new to Linux, buy the powerpak...first of all it gives a few bucks to the people at MandrakeSoft.....they deserve it...Mandrake is really a nice operating system....in 9.2 the 3 extra CD's had loads of software...many packages i'm still trying out....but it's worth the few bucks....am gonna upgrade to 10.0..and will buy the powerpak just because the people at Mandrake earned it...

Open Source is free...but u sometimes have to contribute something....it helps pay for the bandwidth ....without which u wouldn't be able to download for free....

if you're prepared to pay for something why not become a club member, then you get everything and more...

I totally agree. I bought the 9.2 Powerpack, and I will eventually buy a later version. However, in the spirit of free choice, you could download it and try it out. Maybe download and try out another distro or two. Then pay for one you intend to use permanently. There's nothing wrong with that. Yeah, there are extra packages on CD's 4-7, but you have more than you need to run a desktop PC on the Discovery version.

Ah, but don't try doing it on dial-up! ;)
