dm does not load if usb device attached

I have a 600mHz Dell GX100 running Mandriva 2006 which works OK except that if I have an external USB device (CDROM DVD Flash memory etc) attached it does not boot, stopping and leaving the system at a login prompt. Startx does not contiue the process and Ctl Alt Del produces a line saying it could not close dm. Unplugging the usb device fixes it. Any ideas? I am ancient but a fairly experienced Mdk user (5 years +). However I do not yet understand the major changes made in 2006 so please keep the answer fairly simple.
